The Grainery is the first privately developed LEED registered multi-unit residential development in Atlantic Canada
The Grainery is a 6 storey apartment building located in the South End area of Halifax. The area is adjacent to the Halifax port, where large scale industrial buildings lie adjacent to residential neighbourhoods. The Grainery presents itself as a contemporary warehouse, integrating itself with the industrial characteristics of the site. Rusticated precast panels and brick masonry comprise the durable building cladding. Floor to ceiling windows provide ample natural light and views to the exterior. The Grainery also has a large landscaped roof terrace. Site landscaping includes a rear courtyard, a pocket park and terraced landscaped retaining walls. Interior finishes are inspired by a contemporary industrial aesthetic, incorporating such features as exposed concrete masonry walls and exposed architecturally treated concrete ceilings. A central convenience stair within a glazed enclosure, extends from the main floor to the roof, and transmits natural light down to the floors below. It is a candidate for LEED Gold Certification. The Grainery is located on a brownfield site and has many features that make it an environmentally ethical building. Roof mounted solar panels provide domestic hot water heating, and a solar wall incorporated into the façade of the penthouse provides a portion of the space heating for the common areas.
